Review: Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner (Worth the Money?)

There have been many reviews of Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner, but I wanted to test it for myself to find out if it successfully passed the “worth it” test. Most Pureology shampoo reviews are peppered with positivity and feedback that speaks to product benefits and efficacy. Is this enough to shell out a sizable amount for? With the lack of negative reviews, I approached with some skepticism regarding transparency.

Before we begin, make sure you’re ordering Pureology Hydrate Shampoo from a legitimate retailer, NOT from a counterfeit seller. For your convenience, here is the Amazon link to an authentic Pureology Hydrate Shampoo retailer.

Finding a great shampoo and conditioner for any hair type – thin and thick hair, straight or curly hair – can be exceptionally challenging. I wanted to find an effective hair product that made claims that would prove consistent and provide the flexibility to wash hair daily if needed. It’s safe to say I wanted to avoid the disappointment of a product that ceases to work after a certain period of time. I also wanted a product safe and effective, suited to my specific hair care needs and concerns.

If you are anything like me, you spend plenty of your hard-earned money on hair color and a bevy of treatments. You want the color to last as long as possible, and certainly not fade away quickly due to low-quality shampoo and conditioner. Making trips to the salon sooner than necessary for subsequent treatments is not something anyone wants to do. So, when reviewing Pureology‘s shampoo and conditioner I took color fading into consideration as well. We all want to save time as well as money, don’t we? Using the right products can help provide a lasting color hold that improves vibrancy.

I searched around many stores on the internet to find the best deal, considering Pureology’s offering can prove somewhat costly. I was not positive it would meet my expectations and had trepidation about a potential overspend. After finding a fair deal for two 8.5 oz. bottles on Amazon, I made the purchase. In 2022, Pureology actually released a new version of their shampoo, and they’ve bumped the quantity of each bottle to 9 ounces now!

How It’s Described

Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner is described as having the ability to cleanse the hair gently without color stripping (which is great for all of us with pricey coloring treatments). Hair is hydrated while the color is refreshed and kept looking vibrant, leaving hair nourished, vibrant, and healthy.

Note: While the color of the product is purple, this is not a ‘purple’ shampoo that will help tone your blonde hair. It can easily be mistaken for that but if that is what you are looking for, this is not the right fit.

What’s in it?

One of the best features of this product is the ZeroSulfate formula. This allows hair to be rinsed thoroughly and effectively, removing all dirt, soap suds, dandruff, and buildup from dry shampoo, hairspray, and other hair care products. Essential oils comprise this shampoo and conditioner. Some of these include corn, sugar extracts, and coconut oil. Also, with green tea added to this mixture, hair is left moisturized, hydrated and more voluminous. The ingredients also include Aloe Vera, Sandalwood, rose extract, and sunflower seed extract. Anise, Bergamot, Patchouli, and Ylang Ylang give it an aromatherapy blend. Most of the ingredients are all-natural.

The formulation of this effective hair treatment regimen includes Antifade Complex; allowing the prolonged color to your coloured hair by preserving the color treatment effects.

Are There Benefits?

Being a ZeroSulfate shampoo and conditioner, Pureology Hydrate has many benefits. These products help the hair retain more vibrancy, shine, and moisture than a sulfate-containing product. Sulfate-free in general is also great for people with curls as it does not get fizzy and people who like to change their hair colour.

Another benefit you will notice almost immediately, there is less hair loss while washing compared to most other shampoos on the market.

One benefit I love due to my frizzy and dry hair, there is considerably less or no frizz at all when I used these. If you have hair with frizz, you understand how difficult it can be to find products and regimens with taming ability.

Men and women who have their hair colored professionally by a hair stylist or DYI will certainly come to appreciate the color retention and vibrancy benefits.

Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner provide your hair with more strength. Natural oils keep your hair fortified and healthy.

When hair is color-treated, it tends to become dry and lifeless. However, with the use of Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner, colored hair can maintain the correct amount of moisture, removing any traces of dullness or damage. This ensures hair remains bouncy, fuller, and radiant giving it the manageability you need.

Thanks to being all natural with and chemical-free, people with delicate scalps will appreciate the lack of irritation. This makes for a comfortable, gentle, and thorough wash.

Only a small amount of product is needed to receive an efficient amount of lather with each wash. Small bottles of shampoo and conditioner can last a month or more, unlike ones purchased in a salon.

Any Bad Things?

There are only a few cons I found with these products. For people with thicker hair, you might experience a feeling of heaviness. Try an extra rinse to help resolve this issue if you experience this.

If too much of the product is used, your hair may feel greasy. Only a small amount is needed of both the shampoo and conditioner. If you still have this issue when using a smaller amount, you may benefit from an extra rinse as well.

These products are used in the same way as other shampoos and conditioners available on the market. Begin by thoroughly wetting your hair with water. Next, add a small amount of shampoo to the palm of your hand and work into wet hair. Bring hair to a full rich lather. Now, completely work the shampoo throughout your hair as well as your scalp. You’ll want to keep the product in your hair for five minutes prior to rinsing thoroughly.

This shampoo is safe for daily use. For best results, do not use alternative or supplement conditioners.

If you have fine hair or oily hair, you will want to focus the Pureology conditioner on the ends of your hair and avoid the scalp.

The Final Verdict

I found the purple color of this shampoo to be fun and the scent to be exhilarating. The fragrance wasn’t too much and made my hair smell extremely incredible. I must admit; I was surprised that the fragrance lasted all day. After use, my hair felt smooth but not with greasy feel.

After using this hydrating shampoo and conditioner for a few washes, my damaged hair had more body and shine. The frizz my hair usually had seemed to disappear. I loved the soft touch of it and would find myself with my fingers going through my hair several times a day just to get a grab at the smooth texture. Unlike other shampoos where my color would fade quickly (even ones I purchased in a salon), Pureology didn’t fade color as fast and gave long color vibrancy.

After several weeks of use, I found Pureology Hydrate Shampoo and Hydrate Conditioner to be very high-quality, effective hair care premium products. I think they are well worth the money and I would recommend them to everyone, especially for color-treated hair types. I will definitely keep these products on my repeat purchase list.

As a final note, I do have a few friends who dealt with postpartum hair loss, so if you’re looking for such a shampoo, I recommend taking a look at ThinkDifferentlyAboutKids’s list for postpartum hair loss products.

  1. I am 88years old and like a bit of bounce in my hair. The hairdresser recommended the pink bottle of ‘volume’ shampoo and conditioner. I have no problem with the manner in which it cleans the hair but alas , no volume. My hair still falls flat. It was not a cheap purchase so I was disappointed with the outcome because it will take me some time to use up the product.
