While I rarely splurge on body lotion products, when I heard rave recommendations about the legendary Kai Body Butter, I had to test some out for myself.
Considering my naturally dry skin coupled with my affinity for the scent of fresh gardenia, I was already blown away by the product description and the promise of treating dehydration.
Most of us, even those of us like myself with very dry skin, have a tendency to focus on face creams (like the one we reviewed by Dr. Jart for dry skin) and forget about much-needed body lotions. But neglecting to find a solid go-to body lotion or cream if you have dry skin (or even if you just want something to put on after the shower) can leave you feeling parched and even with dry patches on your skin.
So when I finally broke down and purchased Kai’s Body Butter, which isn’t cheap for a body lotion (but I came to realize it was so worth it), I already had some dry patches of skin and was desperately in need of a rich body lotion.
But at the same time, none of us want something that’s going to feel sticky or greasy. So that was the true test.
So is Kai’s Body Butter worth all of its hype and rave reviews?
We tested it out first to find out, so you wouldn’t have to.
Review: Kai Body Butter
When you’re in need of something to treat dry skin and hear about a body butter that’s received rave reviews, the temptation to purchase it becomes too difficult to resist.
So despite the price point, I broke down and splurged on Kai’s infamous body butter and wanted to figure out what all the hype was about. After all, just how great can a body lotion be?
The first time I tested it out was just after getting out of the shower on semi-moist skin, which is usually the best “primer” for body lotions and butters.
The first thing I noticed was the scent, with notes of gardenia and undertones of Shea butter, that blew me away. Other reviewers have compared it to “Hawaii in a jar,” which I think definitely suffices in terms of describing how you’re nearly transported to another realm simply by using this body cream. The smell is just that good.
Unlike many of its competitors and products in the category, it doesn’t have any sticky or greasy texture when applied (on moist or dry skin). Which wins major, major points.
It’s extremely hydrating without being sticky and quickly treats any rough or dry patches, and has a rich yet silky texture that feels extremely luxurious.
Another area that won some brownie points with the infamous Kai body butter was the overall longevity of the product itself. I typically go through body lotions and creams within a month or so, but this one really goes the distance. Even with daily use, it lasted me several months and felt well worth the price.
If you’re feeling parched or simply in need of a daily treat to moisturize your skin, we highly recommend Kai Body Butter, which is definitely hype and a worth it winner for us.

Kai Body Butter: Positives & Negatives
It’s difficult to find many negatives about this product beyond the price point. For me, it was the perfect body lotion to treat dry skin, and would work for nearly every skin type as a “just out of the shower” body butter product.
The notes in the lotion blend together to produce one of the loveliest scents that’s light and natural, and devoid of any harsh chemical odors. It also lacks any sticky or greasy texture you’d find in a lot of competitor products.
With that in mind, here are some main pros and cons to bear in mind prior to purchase:
- Extremely hydrating for dry skin, without having any sticky or greasy texture or leaving any residue behind
- Formulated with Shea butter to hydrate skin and Vitamins A, C and E that condition the skin and help with a more youthful and supple appearance after use
- Lovely fresh scent with notes of fresh gardenia that isn’t overpowering or harsh and smells fresh and natural
- Perfect when used after the shower to lock in moisture into the skin
- Lasts for quite some time and is well worth the cost, even with everyday use it should last for several months
- Cruelty-free company: product was not tested on any animals and no animal product was used during any manufacturing process or in any product formulation
- Safe and suitable for all skin types: can be used even for those with sensitive skin as the product is extremely gentle
- Free of any parabens, sulfates, or harsh chemical additives
- Many reviewers have compared the product to smelling like “Hawaii in a jar”
- The body butter has received nearly perfect 5 star reviews across almost 200 ratings
- Makes a perfect gift giving option for recipients on your list who enjoy body care items
- Cost: at about $40 for 6.4 ounces of product, this is definitely not an inexpensive body lotion, but I found it to be well worth the cost and it lasts for several months even with everyday use
Kai Body Butter: Money-Back Guarantee
If you have very sensitive skin (or price barriers are a concern given this item’s cost for you) or have not used Kai’s products in the past, the return and exchange policy in this case may be a highly important factor for you.
The manufacturer has a strong return and exchange policy that honors full refunds upon dissatisfaction or allergy, and this policy favors the consumer, both new and returning.
If you are dissatisfied with the use of the product, or if it does not work for your skin to provide moisturizing benefits, or if you experience any product allergy or reaction to the formulation, you may elect to return it at any time.
In this case, you will receive a full refund equal to the entire purchase price of the item, if purchased via Amazon (it can’t be guaranteed to apply to individual stores or merchants).
In this case, the formulation of Kai’s Body Butter was very gentle, and fine to use even with very sensitive skin and did not cause any irritation or breakouts, but spot testing is definitely recommended with any topical skincare product.
However, it’s important to note it is extremely gentle and designed for even the most sensitive skin types in mind.
Kai Body Butter: The Final Verdict
In terms of finding the “perfect” body cream, Kai’s body butter is definitely a home run, with all natural ingredients and a scent that transports you to another realm every time you use the product.
It’s great for those with dry skin, but it’s suitable for all skin types, as it’s not too heavy, and never feels sticky or greasy when you use it.
While it doesn’t come cheap for a body lotion in comparison to competitor products, it’s well worth every penny, and feels like a simple everyday luxury. It also lasts several months even with everyday use.
So if you’re looking for that perfect staple body lotion product, this is definitely hype.
It’s hard to find anything wrong with Kai’s famous body butter, and considering the longevity it’s hard to complain about the price point too.
We agree with the reviews comparing this product to Hawaii in a jar, which we think makes it worthy of a solid 5/5 stars.
