Review: Squatty Potty (Does It Deserve Your Skeptical Expression?)

Hmm… OK, let’s do this.

Let me preface this review by saying that I spent some time volunteering in a developing country. During the expedition, we were encouraged by the medics to talk about our “movements”. Not necessarily to them, but to each other, just to be comfortable discussing it.

Let’s face it, it can be a bit of a taboo, but, at the same time, if you’re going too often and it’s too wet that’s bad. If you’re not going at all either, well, that’s bad too. If there is something wrong, being able to talk about it comfortably might firstly identify a concern without you realizing, and secondly,

So that’s why I’m perfectly comfortable about writing this review!

I’d mentioned in another review that I’ve been having some posture-related issues with my back, so anything that might influence that issue in a positive way, I’m happy to at least try!

What even is it though?

For those unfamiliar with it, the Squatty Potty is intended to allow people to squat when they need to use the toilet bowl, as opposed to sit like you would on a regular seat. The idea is that squatting allows for a more natural, and therefore more comfortable, experience.

People have a tendency to hunch over when they sit on the toilet bowl, so the Squatty Potty encourages a straighter spine, which makes the position you assume more comfortable, and better for your back. That’s what I was looking for.

As a bonus, the Squatty Potty also straightens out your colon when you’re undertaking “a movement,” helping to get more out than not using it. Who wouldn’t want to get more out? Your body wants to get rid of it anyway. This is why the Potty can aid weight loss. If you’re in the market for a colon cleanser, then make sure to check out our Colon Broom results!

The scenario

Review: Squatty Potty (Does It Deserve Your Skeptical Expression?) 3

When I first heard about this, no more than literally everybody else who has ever heard of it, I thought it was a very strange idea. I wasn’t 100% dismissive, but I think like everything else you’ve done for as long as you can remember, when somebody tells you there’s a better way to do it, you can’t help but squint your eyes with an inquisitive look.

But then science trots along and says “Hey, we’ve checked, it’s all cool,” it will sway you a little. But then, any company that uses a video of a puppet unicorn for marketing to explain that science, well, they’re onto a winner.

That’s the video at the top of the page, which I highly recommend watching. I write good reviews, but I’m not a puppet unicorn.

My other thought before committing to it was “Would a regular small stool not be OK?” I mean, you can get probably get one for a couple of bucks, as opposed to the $25 for the Squatty Potty. But then the key design feature of the Squatty as opposed to a regular small plastic stool is that it fits tidily under your toilet bowl.

I stand by the idea, but there’s no pretending that the Squatty Potty isn’t far more convenient.

First impressions

It arrived in a perfectly unassuming box.

On removal from said box, I was back to thinking about a cheap stool, but when I took it into the bathroom, and set it under the bowl, I guess that was when I really “got it.” The designers knew what they were doing with this.

So, let’s talk dirty: actually using the thing.

I won’t pretend I wasn’t quite a bit nervous approaching it for the first time. This is something I’ve been doing for over thirty years. That’s long enough to get fairly set in your ways.

But I manned up, mounted the potty, and got squatty.

It was weird, of course, it was. But it wasn’t uncomfortable, but when you’re doing something you’ve been doing forever in a new way, you can’t help but be a little bit nervous that you’re not doing it right.

As I settle into it, I really felt it in my back, which is what I was looking for anyway. Whatever else happened or didn’t happen with it, I was happy with that.

The movement itself was definitely different. I’m not sure if I got more out than before, because I’m just not sure how you measure such things. It felt like I did, but I’m not sure if I really did, or if it was my brain thinking about the unicorn because I’d been successfully marketed at.

Conclusion

I’ve been using the Squatty Potty for a couple of weeks now. It’s definitely not as weird as it was. I’ve actually become very comfortable with it, and just accept that it’s there.

It’s still a great relief on my back, so I’m happy with that.

I haven’t checked if I’ve lost weight. I feel like I have, but I’ve been trying to eat a bit healthier anyway, so it’s hard to know which might be responsible, but I suspect it would need to be a combination of both.

For the sake of $25, if you’re somebody who has posture issues, it’s definitely worth a trial.
