Review: Creme De La Mer Moisturizing Cream (Is it Hype?)

There are very few products in the world that produce such widely variable opinions as does the classic Creme De La Mer Moisturizing Cream. Some see it as the holy grail of all skincare products, others call it comparable to Jergens and a “complete rip-off.” Irrespective of the camp you support, we wanted to honestly and objectively review the classic Moisturizing Cream bearing all factors in mind (efficacy, cost, ingredient, value, longevity). Is this product a miracle in a bottle or a scam?

With a prior background in the cosmetics industry as well as working the typical corporate grind in sales and marketing (I’d say a 9-5 but isn’t it really 5-9?), a diverse breadth of experience combined into an active inquisitiveness about the profitability and marketing trends of the beauty world. How much is business and how much is benefit? Is it fair to the consumer to say 50/50? Or does the consumer deserve more transparency prior to a luxury purchase? While these questions stand the test of time and are nearly impossible to evaluate with accuracy, it’s safe to say both exist and it’s up to the consumer to make an informed decision. You always hear recommendations and negative opinions from friends and family regarding the same products. You can only try it out yourself and provide the most accurate and objective information that bears different demographics in mind. So this review for the self and fan-proclaimed miracle product tries to offer some transparency by underscoring the positives and negatives.

Brand Conception and Ingredients

A cult favorite and classic consumer luxury product, La Mer stands the test of time and enjoys frequent cultural and media references. The first two that come to mind are Michael Keaton in Birdman and multiple references on TV teen dramas (the likes of which the typical youthful audience can dream of affording one day). Of course the influencer marketing trends spare no expense to publicize celebrity fans and social media stars alike. And often the brand recognition is familiar, a product you grew up seeing your grandmother or mother use every night, asking “what’s on your face?!” in horror, only to be met with a wry smile. The brand claims to driven by a “story of hope, healing and one mans deep respect for the sea.” The latter referencing the ingredients used being somewhat secretive (making it all the more controversial) and derived from aquatic sources. In certain accounts that sell the product, visual merchandising displays include large fish tanks with koi fish, swimming about on a backdrop mural of the ocean. A fancier version of a Japanese fine-dining restaurant, so to speak, but….skincare.

Founded by scientist, Dr. Max Huber, who developed a product with legendary healing powers after experiencing burn wounds. And yes, the product can actually treat burn wounds (particularly the concentrate), so we know somethings going right with their formulation. Their proprietary “miracle broth” of sea kelp, vitamins and minerals was discovered by Dr. Huber, who eventually created his own method of unlocking potent activity from pure ingredients, using fermentation processes. Perhaps the most incredible scientific proposal here is using light and sound to amplify ingredient activity during fermentation. Scientists and physicians certainly make good points when discussing frequency-based treatments, in the sense of string theory, it does make sense that our bodies (and perhaps skin, ingredients, etc.) respond to light and sound energy, particles of matter.

The product is not formulated with any harsh dyes, chemicals, mineral oils, parabens, toxic ingredients or additives. It is considered safe for all skin types and safe for sensitivities.

Personal Testimony

To steer away from too much science talk, what does this product actually do, and does it live up to the hype? Personally, when using this cream I found it incredibly addictive. Every night I looked forward to applying it and my skin was noticeably softer, hydrated and visibly younger. I watched the beginning of very fine lines literally disappear, and watched a very small scar wound heal. Results are varied for most but incredible for many. While I did not continue purchasing over time, due to cost, I certainly have no reservations in recommending this in the treatment of dry skin and anti-aging. No better proof can exist than watching the hands of time go back as days go on, simply using a cream. While it’s recommended to pair with serums, cleansers and other treatments in addressing anti-aging aggressively, not many of us can afford that. Suffice to say simple use of the cream alone produces noticeable changes to the skin and appearance. I’d say yes, it deserves the hype, but I know many disagree. Many will never believe in a product offering the proverbial fountain of youth, fair point. So I reviewed positives and negatives closely.

Positives and Negatives

Pros

• Visible anti-aging results quickly. Of all the skincare products on the market, this product absolutely follows through on delivery maximum anti-aging benefits to the skin. It is corrective and preventative, and has a strong ability to reverse fine lines, wrinkles, feathering and sun damage. Above all benefits and pros, the anti-aging effect reign supreme.
• Product scent is favored by most
• Hydrates, smooths, evens and protects the skin
• Fans can expect longevity and are strongly encouraged to use the product as conservatively as possible, excess product and overuse will not amplify benefits
• Can be used daytime or nighttime
• Safe for use with sensitive skin, not formulated with any additives, chemicals, harsh dyes, added perfumes, parabens, silicones or sulfates
• Product can be returned for a full refund if any reaction or product dissatisfaction occurs (at this price point we’d certainly hope so!)

Cons

• Price. This is absolutely a luxury item that comes at a very high cost, higher than any previous skincare/beauty product reviewed.
• The formulation is too thick for some (who may opt instead for the soft or gel based formulas). Very heavy moisturizes can cause clogged pores, buildup and milea on the skin where dead skin forms and gets trapped.
• Many say there are very comparable, or even better products, for a much more reasonable price

The Final Verdict

If one can afford a luxury item and is seeking anti-aging benefits and full skin restoration, this is the splurge to go for. It does seem to verge on being an actual “miracle product,” a rare find, and it truly stands the test of time. Results are visible, fast and noticeable to others. Fine lines and wrinkles are diminished and reversed. It may be a better option than a consult at the doctors office! Ultimately, this product meets worth it/hype criteria. As far as skincare holy grail, there are a lot of products on the market, so we’d never suggest a single one makes all other offerings negligible. This is certainly a standout, a luxury, and absolutely effective. But for consumers with price objections, we see that as a very fair concern and valid point. There are other products that address the signs of aging for a lower cost. Recommended, only if you can handle the sticker shock.
